Nintendo announced via its brand-new news app, Nintendo Today! on Friday the official release date for the live-action Legend of Zelda movie — March 26th, 2027.
Following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which had the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film and earned over $1.36 billion dollars worldwide, the company revealed their plans to release more movies based on their video game franchises in April of last year.
The Legend of Zelda movie will be directed by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, The Maze Runner), with legendary video game designer and Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto serving as consultant and producer, as he did with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Hollywood executive Avi Arad, of the Sony Spider-Man films, including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also on board to produce.
While information on The Legend of Zelda movie is scarce thus far, according to Production List, a monitoring service offered by the Film & Television Industry Alliance, shooting for the movie will take place in New Zealand (the same country where Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies were shot) from November 2025 to April 2026.
The site also provides The Legend of Zelda movie’s first official synopsis, which states that the film will, of course, feature Link, “a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness”.
The synopsis adds, “The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power,” the synopsis continues. “To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”
In addition, movie industry insider and internet personality Daniel Richtman revealed that Nintendo is planning to make a Zelda movie trilogy, with all the major acting roles being signed to film three movies over the course of six years.
Earlier this year, director Wes Ball told Total Film of the importance surrounding the Zelda movie. “I know it’s important, this (Zelda) franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape. I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.”
What do you think of the fact that Nintendo is planning to make a Zelda movie trilogy? Do you think the Zelda movie has the chance to be as successful as the Mario one? Let us know in the comments.
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
