Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is among the most highly-rated additions to the AC game series. It is a huge open-world game with three main story questlines set in Ancient Greece, but the family story will be the primary focus for players new to AC Odyssey. The sheer size of AC Odyssey alone can make it a little daunting for beginners. Here are some Assassin’s Creed Odyssey tips for beginners embarking on the long journey of reuniting the Eagle Bearer’s family.
Choose Your Words Wisely
The first thing to note about AC Odyssey is that its family storyline has variable potential endings (outcomes) based on your dialogue choices with certain NPCs. Your objective for the best ending is to reunite all the Eagle Bearer’s family. These are family NPCs for whom you’ll need to carefully consider your dialogue choices:
- Deimos
- Nikolaos
- Stentor
- Myrrine
If you want to see the best ending, you’ll need to make the right dialogue choices when in conversation with those family NPCs. Remember that the objective is to save those NPCs. So, choose dialogue lines that will most likely avert scuffles with those NPCs.
Play Quests That Match Your Character’s Level
All Assassin’s Creed Odyssey quests have recommended levels for playing them. These indicate the relative level of the enemies you’ll fight in them. The quests will be harder to complete if you attempt them when you’re below their recommended levels. Completing side quests to level up the Eagle Bearer when you’re below the recommended levels for main story quests will make the game easier to play through.
Sync Your Map Locations
The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey map is huge, and the best way to navigate it is to use fast travel. However, you must sync the fast travel locations (bird symbols) on the map to use them. You’ll usually need to do some climbing to sync these, but it’s worth doing so because syncing them gives you more fast travel options for navigating the map. Plus, you’ll also receive XP for syncing map locations, which helps level up your character faster.
Don’t Neglect Your Ship Too Much
The Adriesta is the ship with which you can sail through the seas of Ancient Greece from a relatively early stage in the game. Although naval battles aren’t an especially big part of combat in AC Odyssey, you will still need to fight some to progress through the game’s main story. So, you should set aside some of your collected material resources for upgrading the Adriesta. I recommend upgrading the Adriesta’s hull first to enhance its durability and then its firepower, such as arrows, javelins, and fire braziers.
Prioritize Upgrading Warrior Abilities
Warrior, Assassin, and Hunter are the three skill trees for which you can unlock and upgrade numerous abilities. I recommend prioritizing upgrading Warrior abilities because you’ll always need to engage in lots of open combat to complete main quests, which is often hard to avoid. These are some of the best Warrior abilities you should unlock sooner rather than later:
- Second Wind: Regenerates health in combat
- Warrior Damage: Increases standard attack damage
- Overpower Attacks: Enables high-damage attacks
- Shield Breaker: Enables you to rip shields off enemies
- Spartan Kick: Kicks enemies off high cliffs
Don’t Forget to Engrave Your Weapons
Engravings are special upgrades for weapons and armor you can unlock by solving Ostraka riddles and completing certain feats, such as killing strong mercenaries or eliminating some cultists. You can enhance your weaponry and armor in various ways by adding engravings to them. For example, the Warrior Damage engraving increases basic attack damage by variable percentage amounts. So, don’t forget to ask blacksmiths to engrave weapons and armor to give yourself a combat boost.
Unlock Revelation ASAP
Revelation is a non-combat Assassin ability that’s one of the most important abilities to unlock ASAP. This is because Revelation activates Athena’s sight to reveal all loot and secret passages within a 15-30 meter radius. Thus, it’s an indispensable ability for finding more loot that will help you throughout the game.
Get Stealthy When You Can
AC Odyssey is an Assassin’s Creed title precisely because stealthy assassinating is a part of the game. Although it’s impossible to always avoid open combat, there are still many opportunities for stealthy killing. You’ll usually need to play through the game with a mixture of stealth and open combat. Try to infiltrate forts and camps quietly by taking enemies out with assassin abilities (specifically Rush Assassin and Hero Strike) when you can whittle them down in number before finishing off what’s left in open combat.
Scout Enemy Camps and Forts With Icarus
Icarus is your golden eagle for scouting the map. This eagle is an especially useful tool for scouting enemy forts and bases before infiltrating them. So, make sure you utilize the Icarus to identify the best points to approach and enter forts and camps without alerting the guards. You can also use this eagle for tagging targets, such as chests and enemies, in them.
I hope those Assassin’s Creed Odyssey tips help you play through the game better. Although it’s not especially tough to complete AC Odyssey’s family questline, it’s certainly a long game with some challenging moments. Now go and teach the Cult of Kosmos a lesson in AC Odyssey!
