A Guide to Non-Player Characters (NPCs) in Fortnite

The Fortnite Battle Royale map usually includes non-player characters (NPCs) for players to discover. NPCs are AI-controlled characters in Fortnite that are a part of the game’s seasonal storylines. Many of these NPCs can help you in various ways, but some are there for you to fight against. These are the different types of NPCs in Fortnite.

The Different Types of Enemy NPCs

Fortnite typically includes a few NPC enemy bosses for players to fight, which change for different seasons. These bosses have higher amounts of health and unique fighting abilities that set them apart from bog-standard enemy NPCs. Killing bosses rewards players with very strong weapons of the mythic variety and other unique items that can help you win matches.

Guards are the other type of enemy NPC you’ll encounter in Fortnite Battle Royale matches. These NPCs are henchmen that patrol protected areas. For example, guards patrol bank vaults in Fortnite Chapter 6: Season 2. They’ll open fire whenever you try to enter the areas they’re guarding. It’s usually much easier to kill guards than bosses, but they’ll often fight you in larger numbers.

Is it Worth Fighting Bosses?

In my opinion, it’s not usually worth fighting boss NPCs in Fortnite, but some players might disagree. Sure, you’ll get good weapons and rewards for killing bosses, but fighting them is risky. The toughest bosses in Fortnite can be tricky to defeat and might even sometimes kill you. You’ll also use lots of ammunition and consume health regeneration items when fighting bosses.

Furthermore, fighting a boss gives away your position on the map. Some players will probably hear your gunfire when fighting a boss and close in to attack. This can leave you fighting a boss and a human player who could spring a surprise attack to knock you out of a match. Is fighting bosses for the sake of obtaining some fancy gear worth taking such risks?

The Different Types of Friendly NPCs

Fortnite seasons include numerous friendly NPCs you can talk to (highlighted with speech bubbles on the minimap). These friendly NPCs usually change every season, but most sell you weaponry and other items for gold. Plus, some also give you free healing items when spoken to. It’s always worth speaking to friendly NPCs to see what they’re selling.

Some friendly NPCs sell Rifts rather than weapons. Rifts are stationary objects that teleport you high into the air when purchased. Then, you can pull out your glider when falling to land in a different part of the map.

Specialists are a different type of friendly NPC in Fortnite that you can hire (with gold) to fight alongside you. Such NPCs will move with you across the map and fire at enemy players who get in your way. These are the different types of specialist NPCs you can hire:

  • Scouts: NPCs armed with sniper rifles
  • Medics: NPCs who heal you
  • Heavy Specialists: NPCs who use explosives
  • Supply Specialists: NPCs who drop ammunition for you

Is it Worth Hiring Specialists?

Yes, because specialists are useful to have alongside you in combat as they’ll double your firepower. Medics are especially useful because they will heal you after and during combat, making them the best specialists to hire. Furthermore, it can be confusing for opponents to identify who the human player is when there’s an NPC fighting alongside you.

To make the most of specialists, use them to your advantage. Your hired specialist will provide diversionary gunfire during combat in battle royale matches, enabling you to flank opponents with crossfire. Try moving into alternative positions to your specialists to shoot at enemy players from different directions when fighting them.

Where to Find the Friendly NPCs in Fortnite Chapter 6: Season 2

There are currently 14 friendly NPCs in Fortnite Chapter 6: Season 2 in various locations across the map. Sub Zero (Scout), Jade (Medic), Kendo (Scout), and Night Rose (Supply) are the hirable specialists in this season. Brat, Joss, Keisha, and Skillet are NPCs who sell rifts. This is where you can find the friendly NPCs in Fornite Chapter 6: Season 2:

  • Sub-Zero: On top of a cliff in the forest between Whiffy Warf and Flooded Frogs
  • Big Dill: Crime City
  • Jade: Rolling Blossoms Farm (near Keisha’s Black Market and north of Hopeful Heights)
  • Fishstick: Brutal Boxcars

How to Fight the Bosses in Fortnite Chapter 6: Season 2

Shogun X and Fletcher Kane are the bosses in Fortnite Chapter 6: Season 2. Fletcher Kane is the new boss NPC with a gold monopoly on Oninoshima. Beating Fletcher Kane will reward you with the mythic Double Down Pistol weapon and Unstoppable Medallion he drops when defeated. The Unstoppable Medallion increases your sprint speed and knocks back enemies you run into.

To fight Fletcher Kane, go to one of the vault locations highlighted on the map with a cat symbol near it. The cat symbol highlights the location of Fletcher Kane. You’ll also need to pick up thermite explosives. Chuck a thermite explosive onto a guarded vault to set the alarm bells ringing. NPC guards will start shooting at you and then Fletcher Kane will also appear to protect his vault.

Shogun X is a tougher boss to beat than Fletcher Kane in Fortnite Chapter 6: Season 2. He is a Japanese demon warrior who still roams Oninoshima after Chapter 6: Season 1. Defeating him is slightly more rewarding as you’ll receive a mythical Enhanced Holo Twister Assault Rifle, Super Shield Medallion (which spawns a Shield Bubble), and Chug Jug.

You can fight Shogun X by going to the floating Loot Island that spawns in Storm Circle 4. You can reach Loot Island by walking into one of the non-moving Air Sprites on the ground beneath it. The Air Sprites propel you high enough into the air to land on Loot Island where you can fight and defeat Shogun X.

Overall, NPCs are a big part of Fortnite Battle Royale in the current season and more generally. Although it’s quite easy to ignore the NPC bosses if preferred, you should at least check out the friendly non-player characters to hire or purchase useful gear from them. If you want some top-notch gear, you can also fight the bosses at your peril to obtain it.
