You can play in teams of up to four players for Fortnite Battle Royale squad matches. Playing these squad matches is a little different from solo because there are teammates to help you out. Although you don’t have to win such team matches all by yourself, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easier to win them. Fighting against squads rather than solo players is a slightly different ball game. Here are some Fortnite tips for winning battle royale squad matches.
Try to Land and Play Alongside Teammates
In my experience, teams that stick together generally do better in Fortnite squad matches than those that split up. Try to land near at least some of your teammates when matches start so you can play alongside them from the outset. Landing on your own a long way from teammates puts you in greater danger of being swamped by enemy squads during the early game period. You can’t count on any support from teammates when they’re nowhere near you.
To coordinate your landing with teammates, try pinging an area on the map to land when matches start. Hopefully, your teammates will then jump with you toward that location, but that probably won’t always happen when some players prefer to land elsewhere. If all your teammates head off in different directions when jumping from the Battle Bus, make sure you land near one of them. Then, you can at least play alongside one teammate from the outset.
Use Vehicles to Reach Teammates
Vehicles can come in handy for quickly reaching teammates when you get separated from them. If you’re a long way from nearby teammates, jump in a vehicle and ride towards them to hook up with your squad again. This is a safer and quicker way to reach distant teammates than walking. Even if an enemy squad does see your vehicle, you can zoom past them at high speed to avert a fight.
Shoot at Enemies From Different Angles From Teammates
It’s harder for opponents to play against a team when being shot at from different directions and angles. When squad fights emerge, try shooting at enemies from alternative angles and positions to your teammates. Move away into different positions than your teammates from which you can establish flank fire to catch enemies out. Shooting a team down from the rear when some of your teammates are firing from its front can be all the more effective.
Build Cover When Reviving Teammates
The beauty of Fortnite is that players can build wall covers when necessary. Building walls can help you revive knocked-down teammates during squad battles. Construct a wall fortification around a knocked-down teammate to give yourself cover from enemy fire. Then, revive your teammate behind the walls you’ve built.
This tip will likely work better when there are a few active teammates alongside you. Those players can cover you if an enemy squad attempts to storm your position. Alternatively, cover one of your teammates when they revive the knocked-down player.
Use the Shield Keg to Heal Yourself and Teammates
Shield Keg is a great shield replenishment for Fortnite squad matches to pick up. You can use Shield Keg to replenish the shield for yourself and your teammates. Place Shield Kegs near your teammates after firefights to replenish their shield alongside your own. They’ll be grateful you picked up that item when you do.
Ping Useful Items for Teammates
Pinging is a useful gameplay feature with which you can highlight items you’ve discovered for teammates to pick up during squad matches. You can ping items on the ground by placing your target crosshair over them and pressing the middle mouse button (or wheel). Ping Medkits and other healing items you find for teammates when you’re already carrying as many as you can or need. Or ping decent purple or blue weapons you’re not inclined to pick up that might interest some of your teammates.
Use the Squad Comms Wheel
Communication can help you win Fortnite matches, but not everybody will have headphones for talking with teammates. If you’re playing with random teammates in casual matches, most of them probably won’t be equipped with headphones for voice chat. You can use a keyboard to enter text, but that’s much slower than voice chat.
The Squads Comms wheel is a simple tool you can always use for communicating with teammates. Press and hold the middle mouse wheel to bring up the Squad Comms wheel. You can then select alternative ping communication markers to place over areas by pressing the middle mouse button or wheel. These are the markers you can place for squad communication:
- Watch area
- Location (the default marker)
- Danger
- Defend
- Someone’s been here
- Attack
- Loot area
Carry Knocked Down Teammates to Safer Positions
Don’t forget you can carry knocked-down teammates when they need reviving by pressing the F button (for PC players). This enables you to carry knocked-out teammates to safer places for reviving. For example, carrying a knocked-down player into a nearby building is a safer place to revive them than out in the open. Or carry knocked-down teammates into the safe zone circle for reviving when the storm is closing in on you.
Play it Safe When You’re on Your Own
Sometimes, all your teammates will get killed before you do. When this happens, you’ve got to play solo in a squad match, making it somewhat harder to win. However, it’s not impossible to win a team match with the rest of your squad eliminated.
The best thing to do when you’re on your own in a squad match is to play safe. This means avoiding gunfights you hear or see going on in this distance. Running into a group of enemy players who outnumber you for an avoidable fight is a bad idea. Focus on surviving into the last 10 players for the late game of a match. If you can survive until the end, you could find yourself fighting one remaining player if you’re lucky or four if you’re not. Killing four players alone at the end is tough, but you’ll have a fighting chance against one or two.
Those Fortnite tips will probably enhance your victory chances in squad matches. Of course, more reliable teammates to play with in those matches can also make a big difference. If you play alongside and support your teammates, they’ll probably be of some help to you as well.
