Fortnite: Battle Royale is a game of survival, pitting 100 players to fight it out until only one is left standing. This has remained Fortnite’s most popular game mode ever since 2017, and it continues to attract more new players. A first battle royale victory is usually an objective for any new Fortnite player. Conquering this game mode isn’t necessarily easy, but you don’t need to be an expert player to win a few Fortnite matches. Here are some tips for winning more battle royale matches in Fortnite.
Take to the High Ground
Some players build Fortnite towers in battle royale matches to gain an elevation advantage. However, you don’t need to do that so much at the moment because the current Oninoshima Chapter 6 map includes big mountains that provide natural elevated terrain you can walk up. Unlike towers, players can’t blow away mountains with their guns.
Taking to the high ground will help you win matches because you can see much more of the surrounding map when standing atop mountains or high hills. This will enable you to see more players before they see you. Then, you can open fire on players below to get the first hits in, enabling you to rack up more kills.
Shoot at Heads
Headshots inflict more damage than body shots in Fortnite, as in most other battle royale games. So, aiming and shooting at heads will enable you to take down opponents more quickly. Admittedly, it’s a little harder to hit heads, which is why I recommend doing some aim training to enhance shot accuracy. This Retbit guide tells you how players can aim to train in Fortnite.
Save Two Weapon Slots for Healing Items
Fortnite includes five slots for items, but you’ll never need that many guns to win a match. I recommend reserving two of those five slots for health and shield replenishment items. Use one slot for carrying Med Kits. A second item slot should be for shield replenishment items like Potions or Chug Splashes. Then, you can restore depleted health and shield with such items after killing enemies.
Use Natural Cover
Although you can build forts for cover in Fortnite, natural cover already on the map, like boulders, trees, cliff sides, and buildings, can be just as good. Use natural cover like rocks and trees to conceal yourself from nearby enemies and to protect yourself from gunfire. For example, running behind rocks for a few seconds when you need to reload guns during firefights can save your health. Alternatively, surprise enemies by jumping out from behind cover positions when they don’t know you’re there.
Bushes are another form of natural cover. Although bushes won’t protect you from incoming fire, they’re great for concealment and springing ambushes. Try standing in some bushes where you can wait for enemies to approach and catch them by surprise.
Optimize PCs for Smoother Gameplay
Game stuttering caused by FPS drops can make Fortnite harder to play. Nothing is worse than heavy stuttering occurring during crucial action moments in Fortnite matches, which is seriously off-putting. Laggy gameplay can kill you during gunfights because it delays the game’s response to control actions.
So, try optimizing Fortnite for smoother gameplay. One straightforward way to do this is to reduce the game’s graphical settings. I recommend setting the Rendering Mode option to Lower Graphical Fidelity for better performance. In addition, close superfluous background programs before playing Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher after starting the game on Windows PCs.
Use Scoped Guns
Fortnite Chapter 6 introduced two new scoped guns, the Halo Twister Assault Rifle and Veiled Precision SMG. The Halo Twister Assault rifle has had especially rave reviews from players because it’s one of the most versatile and well-balanced guns in the game. What sets the Halo Twister and Veiled Precision SMG apart from many others is their scoped aiming that will help enhance your shot accuracy, particularly from longer distances. So, always pick up at least one of those two scoped guns when you can.
Steer Clear of Gunfights You Can Avoid
My philosophy for winning Fortnite: Battle Royale matches is simple: let all the other players on the map take care of each other as much as possible. If you want to win more matches, this relatively simple safety-first-playing strategy for survival is the best way to go. You don’t win battle royale matches by racking up the most kills. Avoiding, rather than seeking, gunfights increases your chances of winning matches. The more you get shot at, the more likely somebody will kill you.
With this in mind, try to steer clear of gunfights you hear or see in the distance that you can avoid when playing matches. Walk away from, rather than into, distant gunfire you hear. Let the other players eliminate each other for you, and only go for the kills when you really must do so or when good opportunities arise.
Try landing at areas of the map where other players don’t seem to be heading to avoid early-game scraps. I favor landing at landmarks rather than bigger named locations that usually attract more players when matches start. You can see where other players are falling by pulling out your glider early when leaping from the Battle Bus. If it looks like other players will drop where you’re gliding toward, make a late change in direction to land somewhere safer.
Use Launch Pads to Avoid the Closing Storm
My final tip is to use launch pads during your Fortnite matches. There are numerous launch pads on the map you can jump on to propel yourself high up in the air to glide down from. Jumping on these launch pads is a great way to escape the closing Storm when it’s too close for comfort because they enable you to move across the map much more quickly. Launch pads also come in handy for propelling you into better late-game positions when 10 or fewer players are remaining.
My playing stats show I’ve won 14 matches in Fortnite Chapter 6: Season 1. I hope the tips above help you win some Fortnite matches as well. Good luck!
