Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn live-action movies are on the way, Sony says

“Victory or death! Preferably victory though.”

Hang on to your helmets. Sony announced that two new movies based on popular Playstation franchises are on the way to the big screen at the company’s 2025 CES press conference in Las Vegas on Monday. Although both are in the earliest stages of development and the names of attached talent haven’t yet been divulged, the games on which they’re based are popular enough to get excited nonetheless.

“I’m excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2,” PlayStation Productions’ head Asad Qizilbash said at the conference.

Helldivers 2, an online co-op shooter that’s like an amalgam of Starship Troopers, Deep Rock Galactic and Warframe was the surprise hit of 2024. The Arrowhead Studios-developed sees players join the elite team of the Helldivers, supersoldiers who wear highly-advanced combat armor, drop down onto alien planets to complete missions and take on hordes of oversized insects and robots with an array of futuristic weaponry. In the name of democracy, of course.

Helldivers 2 sold a staggering 12 million copies in its first 12 weeks on sale for the PS5 and PC, beating out previous record holder God of War Ragnarok.

Qizilbash later revealed that Horizon Zero Dawn was the second live-action Playstation-based film in development.

“Horizon is one of our most exciting IPs, filled with so much potential to expand into new categories and genres.”

Qizilbash noted that one such category was the recently-released collaboration with Lego.

“The most recent example is Lego Horizon Adventures, which launched this past November – a playful story inspired by the world of Lego and made fully out of Lego elements.”

He then added, “There is one more Horizon project I’m excited to be able to reveal for the first time here today. Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are at the early stages of developing a film adaptation of the award-winning Horizon Zero Dawn.

“Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far-future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen.”

Horizon Zero Dawn sees players take on the role of Aloy, a post-apocalyptic tribal hunter who must test her wits and survival skills in an open-world adventure against a multitude of robotic animals.

Playstation Productions was formed in 2019 with the intent of adapting Playstation IPs into film and TV formats. Its projects include 2023’s Gran Turismo (directed by Neill Blomkamp and starring David Harbour and Orlando Bloom), 2022’s Uncharted (starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg and Sophia Taylor Ali) and the Twisted Metal and The Last of Us TV series.

Also announced at the 2025 CES press conference that an anime based on Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghosts of Tsushima was in development, a collaborative effort with Crunchyroll and Aniplex.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
