Make way, Super Mario — there’s another iconic video game character making his way to the top of the box office earnings and he’s moving fast.
After the continued success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 this past weekend (the film, which added Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog to the cast, has earned over $187 million domestically and $330 million worldwide since its December 20th release), the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has raced past over a billion dollars at the box office, with the three films earning a total of $1.06 billion as of this writing.
The milestone was acknowledged on Paramount’s official Sonic the Hedgehog X/Twitter account.
“Woo-hoo! The Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise zooms past $1 billion at the global box office! Thank you to the best fans in the world,” the post said.
The first Sonic film, released in February 2020 pulled in over $320 million at the global box office. The sequel, released in April 2022 has earned over $405.5 million globally. The third film has already surpassed the earnings of the first, with worldwide earnings of over $336.3 million.
According to Paramount Pictures, the first two Sonic films induced $181 million in consumer spending from home rentals and purchases.
Paramount has apparently already greenlit a fourth Sonic film, with renowned actor Jim Carrey, now synonymous with the Dr. Robotnik role, saying he’d be willing to return to the role if the same developmental team is at the helm.
By comparison, as of this writing, The Super Mario Bros. film, released in 2023 by Illumination and Nintendo, has earned over $1.36 billion at the worldwide box office.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
