Warning: Semi-spoilers ahead for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Whether Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was the catalyst for renowned actor Jim Carrey coming out of retirement or simply the film franchise that made him warm up to being in sequels, one thing is for certain: the 62-year-old is having plenty of fun in his role as Sonic nemesis Dr. Robotnik, and the effort is more than noticeable on the big screen.
So what’s next for Carrey after showing he’s the quintessential Dr. Robotnik? Although Sonic the Hedgehog 3 leaves the evil genius’ fate up in the air, Carrey said he’s willing to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
“I’m definitely open,” Carrey told Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today. “I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, ‘that sounds fun’, then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me.”
Carrey added that he’s had a great experience working with the team behind the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and that has certainly factored into his decisions to reappear in the sequels thus far.
“I certainly love this crew,” Carrey continued. “I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, ‘how about if you do this?’ They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is already closing in on $250 million in the international box office and $150 million domestically, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2024. If the movie passes $405 million worldwide it will surpass the second film as the highest-grossing one in the franchise.
Unsurprisingly, Paramount Pictures has already given the green light (ride) for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is already foundational stages and tentatively slated for a 2027 release.
What do you think of the fact that Jim Carrey said he’s willing to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4? Would you like to see Carrey return as both Gerald and Ivo Robotnik or a new version of the character, like Eggman Nega? Do you think it’d be better to have a film without Robotnik given the circumstances of Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s ending? Let us know in the comments.
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
