It looks like the avid gamers who anticipated that Call of Duty‘s success might be curtailed following the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard merger were mistaken. That’s because the recently released Black Ops 6 was the biggest Call of Duty launch ever.
There was also speculation surrounding how the game’s success would be affected by it being the first Call of Duty available at launch on Game Pass on day one and according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Black Ops 6 set not only a Call of Duty record but a Game Pass subscriber one as well.
“Last week’s launch of Black Ops 6 was the biggest Call of Duty release ever, setting a record for day one players as well as Game Pass subscriber adds on launch day,” Nadella said in Microsoft’s first quarter earnings report on Wednesday.
“And unit sales on PlayStation and Steam were also up over 60% year-over-year. This speaks to our strategy of meeting gamers where they are by enabling them to play more games across the screens they spend their time on.”
According to Nadella, the acquisition of Activision Blizzard helped drive a 43% increase in Xbox revenue during the company’s first quarter.
As for the near future of the game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be launching its popular Warzone battle royale mode on November 14th, Activision announced on Tuesday. The popular multiplayer map, Nuketown, which takes place on a nuclear test site in Nevada, will be added on November 1st.
“Thank you to our players around the world for making Black Ops 6 the biggest Call of Duty launch ever. Our goal from the start has been to bring this great game to as many players as possible wherever they are, however they play,” Call of Duty GM Matt Cox said in a statement. “Black Ops 6 is an amazing game, and the response from the Call of Duty community has been incredible. This is only the beginning. Nuketown is only days away and Season 1 is right around the corner. We’re just getting started.”

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
