Halo Infinite third-person mode will be added later this year

Longtime Halo fans wondering why they had to shell out their hard-earned money for armor coatings and cosmetics in a first-person-shooter where they wouldn’t even see their character for 90% of their gameplay can rest a little easier knowing that a Halo Infinite third-person mode will be added later this year.

The news for the Halo Infinite third-person mode was announced at the 2024 Halo World Championship in Seattle, where 343 Industries senior community manager John ‘Unyshek’ Junyszek announced that the feature would “be supported at a mode level,” meaning that players likely won’t be able to switch from third-person to first-person on the fly unless aiming down sights and that either first-person or third-person would be decided at the start of a match in multiplayer.

While it’s unknown which sections of the game Halo Infinite third-person mode will be added to exactly, it’s safe to assume that it’ll be included for multiplayer at the very least, as it’s been confirmed for developers in Forge mode. It’s not confirmed whether the option to go third-person in the campaign will be included however.

“It’s a fun way to play, you have more awareness, you get to see your Spartan, it’s super cool,” Junyszek said.

“Internally people have been loving it and I’m excited for everyone to get their hands on it later this year.”

Skybox Labs senior software engineer Colin Cove added, “The team did a lot of work on aiming, making sure that things were accurate.”

“The camera position has changed so dramatically,” Junyszek continued. “Normally the camera’s in your head, and wherever you’re looking, you’re shooting.

“Now with the third-person camera, where your camera is behind you, you have to account for two different kinds of inputs on our aiming system and it took a lot of work to make that happen.”

The Halo Infinite third-person mode is expected to be added to the game alongside an update in November.

What do you think of the fact that a Halo Infinite third-person mode will be added later this year? Do you think Halo Infinite needs a third-person mode? Do you think the third-person mode was added as a result of the popularity of a third-person shooter like Fortnite? Let us know in the comments.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
