The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, which was confirmed back in the beginning of the year, is currently in production and although where exactly it will take place and which new characters will be introduced is still as of yet unrevealed, Toad actor Keegan-Michael Key dropped some hints about what to expect in Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 in a recent interview.
“One thing I can say about the second movie is that it’s a little broader in scope, and where it takes place is very intriguing lore and the Mario world,” Key told Mens Journal. “They’re going to find some really fantastic Easter eggs and it’s been very exciting so far.”

Key added, “I feel like what they’ve done creatively is they’ve really widened out the universe that these characters live in and we’re going to meet some new folks. We’re going to meet some new folks that are old favourites and some folks that I think are really deep cuts, but because of the way the story’s laying itself out right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in 2023 and featured the voice acting talents of Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach. The film grossed a staggering $1.36 billion at the box office, the second highest total of 2023, beating out such films as Oppeheimer, Fast X, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It was second only to the Barbie movie.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel is set to release in April of 2026.
