While Helldivers 2 had a valiant run, the co-op third-person-shooter couldn’t tackle the latest offensive threat in the form of EA Sports College Football 25, the first major college football game since EA College Football 14 over a decade ago. Apparently, the ten-year wait fueled more than just a little anticipatory hype for the game, as College Football 25 more than tripled the sales of the previous entry.
In addition, College Football 25 was such a touchdown that it drove double-digit growth in US video game spending in the month of July, per research firm Circana, per its monthly industry sales report on Wednesday.
“Launch month dollar sales of EA Sports College Football 25 more than tripled the total lifetime dollar sales of the previous best-selling college football game, NCAA Football 07,” Mat Piscatella, Circana Executive Director and Video Game Industry Advisor said in the report.
Piscatella added, “EA Sports College Football 25 debuted as the best-selling game of 2024 year-to-date and was the primary driver of both content and hardware growth on console platforms.”
In addition to EA Sports College Football 25 topping the charts for the month of July, placing second on the list was the “EA Sports MVP Bundle, which includes the EA Sports College Football 25 Deluxe Edition and Madden NFL 25 Deluxe Edition.”
What makes the numbers even more impressive is the fact that College Football 25 released on July 10th, meaning that the data shared by Circana covers only 12 days of sales and makes its dethroning of such vaunted titles as Helldivers 2, Dragons Dogma 2 and Elden Ring as the top-sellers of 2024 all the more notable.

Although Helldivers 2 has enjoyed massive sales success, the game’s developer, Arrowhead Studios has stated recently that they wish to remain an independent studio.
