There’s no rush to release Fallout 5, Bethesda says: “I don’t think it’s bad for people to miss things as well”

Fans might be clamoring for new Fallout material, especially with the overwhelming success of the recent Amazon Prime series (the show had 65 million viewers in its first 16 days and has already been greenlit for a second season), but Bethesda isn’t in any rush to churn out a new Fallout game, namely Fallout 5 to coincide with the series’ popularity. Instead, explains Bethesda Studios executive producer Todd Howard, they want to take their time and “get it right” with the next installment in the Fallout mainline series.

“For other Fallout games in the future, obviously I can’t talk about those right now,” Howard said on the MrMattyPlays YouTube channel, “but I would say sort of rushing through them, or we need to get stuff out that is different than the work we’re doing in Fallout 76, we don’t feel like we need to rush any of that.”

“Right now, the Fallout TV show fills a certain niche in terms of the franchise and storytelling. I totally get the desire for a new mainline single player game and look, those things take time. I don’t think it’s bad for people to miss things as well.

“We just want to get it right and make sure that everything we’re doing in a franchise, whether it’s Elder Scrolls or Fallout or now Starfield, that those become meaningful moments for everybody who loves these franchises as much as we do.”

Bethesda announced that their next big release, which will likely be Elder Scrolls 6, has left the pre-production phase and that development is in progress, which means that Fallout 5 would probably enter development after ES6‘s release.

“Obviously I can’t talk about the stuff we’re working on in this moment,” Howard added. “I’d like to hold this stuff back as long as possible, and you know, my perfect scenario for games are to announce them and get them out as quickly as possible.”

What do you think of the fact that Bethesda says there’s no rush to release Fallout 5? Do you think Bethesda should take their time and “get it right” as executive producer Todd Howard explained or should they be capitalizing on the Amazon Prime series’ success with a new mainline game and not just new content from Fallout 76? Let us know in the comments.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
