Though the game celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, don’t expect a Final Fantasy 6 remake in the vein of the recently released Final Fantasy 7 remake anytime soon. That’s because FF7 remake producer Yoshinori Kitase thinks a Final Fantasy 6 remake, which would be the first Final Fantasy remake that would need to be done from the ground up, instead of just implementing graphical overhauls and redesigns; such a process would be very difficult, Kitase said in an interview with French YouTuber Julien Chieze, roughly twice as long as the FF7 remake took — a total of 20 years considering the FF7 remake required ten years to make.
Kitase admitted that the game would be bigger than the FF7 remake project, with a stifling contributing factor being the vast number of characters in the game. The notion reiterates statements Kitase has made in the past regarding a Final Fantasy 6 remake being made, who also noted he knows how high in demand such a remake is from both Square Enix developers and FF fans.
At the time, Kitase said on the Square Enix YouTube channel, “[The] Final Fantasy 7 remake is not yet finished so I am not able to think about it, but for Final Fantasy 6, there are many Final Fantasy 6 fans inside the company and they often ask me: ‘when are we making six?'”
Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi added his thoughts on why a Final Fantasy 6 remake would be so difficult, noting that the original game’s pixel art and 2D format would make it much more problematic to redo, with such a process requiring a near overhaul of the story and graphics.
Final Fantasy 6 was first released on the SNES in 1994. It was later ported to the Playstation in 1999 and the Gameboy Advance in 2006 before being included in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster alongside remastered versions of Final Fantasy 1-5.
What do you think of the fact that a Final Fantasy 6 remake would take twice as long as FF7 remake to develop? Would you like to see a Final Fantasy 6 remake or does a 20-year time frame seem a bit excessive for its development? Let us know in the comments.
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
