Baldur’s Gate 3 is already a densely-packed, fully-realized, richly developed game but developer Larian Studios isn’t “done yet” with the 2023 Game Awards Game of the Year winner.
“Currently, we’ve not stopped updating the game,” Baldur’s Gate 3’s writing director, Adam Smith revealed on the Xbox On Twitch channel. “We’re going to carry on updating it.” While Smith wasn’t able to reveal much more than that on future Baldur’s Gate 3 updates at the moment, he did add, “All I can tell you is that we do plan to do more updates, we’re not done yet.”
When asked about which elements from the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game source could still be implemented into BG3, such as the oft-wished for addition of new races, Smith replied, “We don’t have specific plans for new races at the moment, but we’re not saying no.”
Smith then explained that there was a sizeable amount of content and features left out of the main Baldur’s Gate 3 game, either because it “wouldn’t fit” or because it wasn’t congruous in the narrative sense.
“There’s loads of stuff that we intentionally didn’t put in because it didn’t fit,” Smith said. “There’s many, many things where we were like ‘okay, that would be cool but does it fit the campaign, the story we’re telling?’ but there’s some stuff where we’re like ‘this would be nice to think about later’ – there’s a lot in Baldur’s Gate 3 already but we didn’t want to leave it be.”
While the prospect of future updates for Baldur’s Gate 3 is promising, don’t expect anything in imminent fashion. According to Smith, Larian Studios is Larian is “very much thinking about our next things,” but just has “nothing to announce” yet.” If the way Baldur’s Gate 3 turned out is any indication however, good things are worth waiting for when it comes to Larian.
What would you like to see in future Baldur’s Gate 3 updates? Would you like to see new races added? If so, what new races do you think would be fun to see in BG3?
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
