This might be a bit of a no-brainer, considering The Super Mario Bros. Movie had the biggest ever opening weekend for an animated film, and is sitting atop a pile of golden coins as the highest-grossing film of 2023 thus far (the film is closing in on nearly a billion dollars in the worldwide box office at the time of this writing), but there is “no doubt” that more Nintendo movies are coming, according to Mario creator and legendary video game developer Shigeru Miyamoto.
“Please keep an eye on our next production,” Miyamoto told Japanese news site Nikkei. “This time, Mario was the focus, but Nintendo is like a talent agency. We have many other entertainers [in our catalog].”
Miyamoto didn’t mention specifically which Nintendo movies might be next, but he did add, “There are various ways to develop characters [for the big screen], including characters that are suitable for film and characters that are well known.”
Seth Rogen, who plays Donkey Kong in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, said in recent interviews that he thinks “a Donkey Kong movie would be fun.”
Rogen added, “I honestly had a great time doing [the Super Mario Bros. Movie] and I think it’s a big world, gigantic, and it seems to be a thing that people are excited to see.”
Which Nintendo movies would you like to see in the future after the Fire Flower-hot success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie? Donkey Kong? The Legend of Zelda? Samus Aran from Metroid? StarFox? A solo Luigi project? Kirby? Super Smash Bros.? Let us know in the comments.
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
