Mortal Kombat 11 earned a franchise-record $500 million in profit

The Mortal Kombat series, which has been going strong for over thirty years now, is the best-selling fighting game series of all time. That rings true for the latest installment in the franchise as well, Mortal Kombat 11, which earned a franchise-record $500 million in profit, according to the LinkedIn profile of Matt Welsh, a former global brand manager at Warner Bros. Entertainment (first spotted by Twitter user Timur222).

Welsh, who worked as the global manager for Warner Bros. from the period of 2019 to 2022, and was head of the team which worked on the product and marketing campaign for Mortal Kombat 11, the Kombat Pack DLCs and the MK11: Aftermath expansion, Mortal Kombat 11 earned a franchise-record $500 million in profit as of February 2022.

In light of Mortal Kombat 11‘s success, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. has already the game’s sequel, confirmed Mortal Kombat 12 for release sometime in 2023.

NetherRealm Studios is also working on an action-adventure Mortal Kombat spin-off designed for mobile platforms, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.

“We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature,” NetherRealms creative director Ed Boon said of Onslaught. “With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
