Halo Infinite had the biggest launch in the series with over 20 million players

As the news of Halo Infinite multiplayer becoming the most played Xbox game ever on Steam in less than 24 hours seemed to presage, Halo Infinite had the biggest launch in the series with over 20 million players, Microsoft’s latest earnings report (Q2 2022) revealed. Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer mode launched in surprise fashion on November 15th while the campaign mode was released on December 8th.

“The big bets we have made across content, community and cloud over the past few years are paying off,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in the earnings report. Nadella added that overall engagement and revenue for Microsoft gaming overall also saw record numbers, as well as the company’s increasingly important online subscription service, Game Pass, which reached a new milestone in subscriber numbers.

“We saw record engagement as well as revenue this quarter. Game Pass has more than 25 million subscribers across PC and console,” Nadella added. Nadella also mentioned Xbox Game Studios’ flagship title which experienced its biggest launch in the series: Forza Horizon 5, which had over 18 million players since its record-breaking launch on November 9th.

Overall, Microsoft’s Xbox gaming division recorded its highest annual revenue ever in 2021 with $16.28 billion.

Although Halo Infinite had the biggest launch in the series’ history, could Microsoft’s upcoming acquisition of Activision Blizzard lead to even more colossal numbers? Will we see Master Chief crossover into games like Overwatch or even Heroes of the Storm as a playable character?

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
