Fortnite removes Travis Scott emote in light of Astroworld Festival tragedy

Epic Games has discontinued the sales of the Travis Scott “Out West” emote, one which contains an audio sample from the Travis Scott/Jackboys song “Out West,” from the Fortnite Item Shop.

Although Epic Games has refused to officially comment on the exact reasoning behind the removal, the decision comes with discernible recency to the 2021 Astroworld Festival tragedy on November 5th, where eight people were killed and hundreds more were injured at the Houston, Texas festival run by Travis Scott. Fortnite released several in-game Travis Scott items to celebrate the artist’s Fortnite virtual concert; as of this writing, only the “Out West” emote has been removed from the in-game store. It’s unclear whether any other Travis Scott-related items will be removed in similar fashion.

Scott has come under intense scrutiny in the events following the Astroworld Festival tragedy, with investigative outlets such as Yahoo News and the Washington Post citing Scott’s decision to continue the show “30 minutes after a mass casualty declaration was made” as further attributing to the deadly consequences of the event. The Astroworld Festival was originally scheduled to continue for a second day on November 6th, but Day 2 was cancelled and an investigation into the events of the tragic situation are ongoing.
