NieR: Automata was released on the Xbox Game Pass for the PC this past week but instead of celebrating the launch on a new platform, a number of longtime fans of the game instead are review bombing it on Steam. The reason? The Game Pass version of NieR: Automata apparently remedies many of the problems faced by the Steam version, such as resolution issues, in-game freezes, framerate drops and vexing control options to name just a few.
According to users on such forums as ResetEra, the Game Pass version of NieR: Automata not only ameliorates the aforementioned problems from the Steam version, but also runs more smoothly overall, with a higher resolution to boot.
The vexation from fans of the Steam version NieR: Automata can be seen in review bombed negative commentary such as, “[A]fter letting the Steam port languish for four years Square Enix did the impossible: they put a better version of the game on Gamepass PC with FidelityFX, HDR, borderless mode, and improved performance while doing absolutely nothing about the preexisting version,” and “Thank you Square Enix for releasing a patched version of the game on Game Pass and NOT updating this one.”
The influx of negative reviews for the Steam version of NieR: Automata have caused the Recent Reviews category to drop from “Very Positive” to “Mixed,” with many fans incensed by the fact that has still been no word from Square Enix on whether or not the Steam version of the game will be updated.
PlatinumGames and Square Enix recently celebrated a milestone with NieR: Automata as it passed the 5 million copies sold back in late December.
Have you noticed a difference in the performance of NieR: Automata on the Xbox Game Pass for PC and the Steam version? Do you think people are justified in review bombing NieR: Automata on Steam or is there a better way to voice their concerns? Let us know in the comments.
