The news that Nier: Automata has passed the 5 million copies sold mark shouldn’t come as the biggest surprise to fans of the post-apocalyptic series, which focuses around alien-created machines and human-created androids embroiled in all-out war, as the game topped the charts during its first week of release in Japan (February 24, 2017) with 198,542 copies sold. By May 2019, the game had reached worldwide shipments of 4 million copies, greatly exceeding Square Enix’s sales expectations, well enough to have Square Enix consider making Nier into a franchise. The milestone also makes Nier: Automata the highest-selling PlatinumGames title ever.
Nier: Automata has been nominated for and won several gaming awards, winning the Best Score/Game Music category at The Game Awards 2017; Games of the Year Division – Award for Excellence at the 2017 Japan Game Awards; Role Playing Game of the Year at the 2018 D.I.C.E. Awards and Excellence in Technical Achievement and Excellence in Musical Score, respectively, at the 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards.
The fact that Nier: Automata has passed the 5 million copies sold mark is an accolade that should bring about a sense of extra accomplishment to the game’s director and writer, Yoko Tara, who began working on the games through their precursor, the Drakengard series starting in 2003. Drakengard was followed by a sequel, a prequel, and the spin-off games Nier and Nier: Automata, which are set in an alternate reality of the future resulting from one of the endings of the Drakengard games.
The next big release in the Nier: Automata series is NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139. (have fun getting your parents to remember that one next Christmas, kids), which will be released for the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC platforms on April 23rd, 2021.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
