Despite the slew of bugs and subpar AI behavior in Cyberpunk 2077, one of the game’s most impressive elements is the ambiance of Night City, which, as we’ve mentioned before in our analysis of the game, is one of the most impressive video game cities we’ve ever seen.
Interestingly enough, publisher CD Projekt Red had some assistance in building the sprawling, futuristic Night City from the ground up in the form of a government grant from the Polish government. CDPR received $7.5 million for their work on Cyberpunk 2077 in 2016, including the creation of a “living city,” “Cinematic feel,” “animation excellence,” and some elements of the game which we still have yet to see, such as “seamless multiplayer.” The grant was part of a $116 million PLN fund granted by the National Center for Research of Development which was also granted to a number of other Polish video game developers such as Tate Multimedia (Urban Trial Freestyle) and Spectral Games (Hot Wheels, Fury of the Gods).
Here are some rough translations from Polish to English regarding the areas of Cyberpunk 2077 for which CDPR received the government grant.
City Creation: A comprehensive technology for creating “a living”, playable in time, real, large-scale city based on rules, artificial intelligence and automation and includes the development of innovative processes and tools supporting the creation of the highest quality open world games.
Seamless Multiplayer: Comprehensive technology enabling the creation of unique multiplayer gameplay, including searching for opponents, session management, replication of objects and support of various gameplay modes together with the unique set of dedicated tools.
Cinematic Feel: Comprehensive technology for providing a unique, film quality RPG with open world, also taking into account innovative solutions Process and unique set of dedicated tools.
Animation Excellence: Comprehensive technology enabling a significant increase in quality and production of complex face and body animations for open world RPG games, also taking into account the innovative process solutions and a unique set of dedicated tools.
Do you think Cyberpunk 2077 game fulfills the criteria listed to necessitate their Polish government grant? Let us know in the comments.
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
