Batman is dead.
This is the premise of Gotham Knights, upcoming co-op action roleplaying video game from Warner Bros. Montreal, the same team behind 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins. The trailer, which debuted at the DC FanDome virtual event centers around a post mortem message from Bruce Wayne, who instructs the Bat-Family — Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Robin (Tim Drake), Nightwing (Dick Grayson) and Red Hood (Jason Todd) to carry on the enduring mission to protect Gotham City in his absence.
Gotham Knights is set in an open world Gotham City and will allow players to assume the role of the four aforementioned Bat-family members, the titular Gotham Knights, each featuring different playstyles and unique abilities. For instance, Robin will make use of a Justice League teleporter, Red Hood will pack his trademark pair of .45 caliber pistols, Nightwing looks to employ his Flying Grayson-honed agility and Escrima sticks and more.
The Gotham Knights trailer shows the four heroes’ individual reactions to Bruce Wayne’s message as well as intriguing features like cooperative, tandem maneuvers, such as Batgirl kick flipping an attacker into a Robin Battle Staff slam; Batgirl grappling gunning through a much more flame-engulfed, derelict, lawless-looking Gotham City than we’re used to; the heroes cruising on their Bat-cycles and encounters with Bat-villains such as Mr. Freeze and the Court of Owls (a secret society which has puppeteered Gotham City behind the scenes for centuries). One other feature foreshadowed in the trailer is what appears to be either upgradeable or alterable costumes as Batgirl in one scene sports a cowl which more closely resembles Batman’s full head covering as opposed to her more minimalistic domino mask look.

The official Gotham Knights YouTube channel also released a 7-and-a-half-minute look at Gotham Knights‘ gameplay, highlighting Batgirl whipping through Gotham streets on her Bat-cycle, navigating rooftops, jumpkicking off the sides of trucks to unleash devastating combo attacks on criminals and taking on Mr. Freeze in a boss battle.
Gotham Knights is set to release sometime in 2021. What did you think of the Gotham Knights trailers? Sound off in the comments.
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
