Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath – Official Friendships Trailer features wine drinking, pattycake with Mileena and more

Warning: Mature content, blood and gore, intense violence and mature language in the following trailer.

The latest trailer for Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath starts off with pretty standard fare: Scorpion fileting his latest opponent, this time Sub-Zero with his trusty Spear. After impaling Sub-Zero’s head a few more times and sending gouts of blood splattering all over the camera, the infamous words of “FINISH HIM!” reverberate throughout the arena.

What does Scorpion have in store for his unlucky assailant this time? “You’re Next,” where Scorpion decapitates the opponent, spin kicks the head into the air and then skillfully shoots his Spear through it like a Western gunslinger?

Or maybe “Chain Reaction,” where Scorpion lassos his opponent with chains glowing volanic-hot and molten-orange like Ghost Rider, gives them a tug and splits the enemy down the middle?

Try neither. Instead, he busts out… an enormous teddy bear?! Sub-Zero chuckles giddily at the sight of this, dashes off screen and returns commandeering an ice cream vendor tricycle. What the hell is going on? Friendships are back in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, that’s what.

If you’d told us 20 years ago we’d be listening to Smash Mouth in a Mortal Kombat trailer, we would’ve looked at you funny (and probably looked into getting you committed); somehow though, their rendition of “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” fits the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Official Friendships Trailer to a tee.

Other notable Friendships in this trailer? Sandcastle building. Mileena (!) and Kitana playing patty cake. Cassie Cage taking a selfie. The T-800 grinning cheesily on a motorcycle while giving a slow-motion thumbs-up. Noob Saibot pulling off a competitive jump rope routine. Raiden performing a virtual light show. Shao Kahn using his Wrath Hammer on a carnival strength tester. Liu Kang disco-dancing. Jax with sunglasses on, belting out tunes on a saxophone with florid, effusive style. And much, much more.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
